Uninhibited Tourists
Type: Rapid Design Project
Direction: Strategy Design, Product Design
Year: 02.2019
Location: University of Applied Sciences Potsdam (Germany)

Background: Tourists who come to the island on vacation can quickly lose their attention to environmental protection while enjoying a relaxing time, resulting in worse marine pollution. According to a Maldives survey, each tourist generates four times as much trash per day as residents. Data also shows that the pollution in the marine area where the famous tourist islands of Ibiza and Formentera are located is 30 times the average plastic pollution of the Mediterranean Sea.
Apart from objective reasons, this terrible situation must also be related to the tourists' environmental awareness. Tourists have no sense of belonging during their stay on the resort island and are in complete relaxation. Therefore they lose their sense of ecological awareness and no longer adhere to it.
Topic
Take the island of Ibiza as an example. Local environmental organizations often organize promotion and volunteering activities. Still, most tourists do not pay attention to those events because they are unwilling to spend their energy and time on a short vacation. An interesting phenomenon is that a famous restaurant, club, or sightseeing spot always attracts many people willing to wait in line for a long time in a travel destination. Is it possible for us to use these limited public resources to motivate tourists to contribute to protecting the environment?
Transformation
People can exchange the plastic waste they collect for priority access to certain popular places instead of paying more money. Some unique events may even require customers to collect a certain amount of plastic to qualify for entry. The government would offer people free bags of different sizes for plastic waste collection.
